There is a real concern among ratepayers and businesses in the historical Central Business District of Hermanus that the Whale Coast Mall may seriously affect the viability and unique character of the CBD.
From the Chairman's Quarterly Report (15 April 2022)
The next phase of the CBD Regeneration project will focus on the general area of the Taxi Rank at the entrance to the CBD. The area is currently quite scruffy and not a good advertisement for Hermanus.
The areas receiving attention are the parking area opposite the NG Kerk, The Circle, the Welcome board and the Taxi Rank precinct itself.
We anticipate that there will be the same level of consultation with interested and affected parties as with the High Street component.
From the Chairman's 2021 Annual Report
The High Street component of the CBD regeneration project was completed in the middle of the year and despite the delays it has been welcomed by all who live, work and shop there.
Visitors and locals alike have commented on the ambience which has been created and business owners within the precinct are delighted with the development.
The municipality has agreed to the closure of a section of the street at peak weekend and holiday times and this is welcomed.
The HRA was closely involved in the High Street design phase and kept up pressure on the municipality to complete the project whilst maintaining acceptable standards of finish.
The HRA has been working with the Overstrand Municipality in the preparation of the approved CBD Regeneration Plan from early on.
